How Do You Know It’s His Whisper?
The Church I Learned to Love
Many years ago, about twenty-four years or more, I used to drive past a large Catholic church every time I went to visit David and his precious children.
For years, it was simply a church I passed on my way.
Then one day, something changed.
As I drove by, I felt a gentle nudge in my spirit. Not an audible voice. Just that quiet, familiar whisper of the Holy Spirit.
“Pray for this church.”
So I did.
Every time I drove past, I prayed. I prayed for the priests. I prayed for the congregation. I prayed for the children. I prayed that every person who walked through those doors would encounter the love of Jesus.
Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months.
Something beautiful began happening inside my heart.
I fell in love with a church I had never even stepped inside. I thought about the people often. I wondered how they were doing. I asked the Father to bless them.
One evening after work, I went to visit David. We weren’t married then. He was simply the man I loved, who would one day become my husband.
I asked him, “Would you walk to the church with me?”
It wasn’t just around the corner. We walked several blocks that evening.
As we walked, we talked about the prayers I had been praying for months.
The evening was perfect. The air was warm. A gentle breeze surrounded us as the sun slowly set and evening wrapped around us.
By the time we reached the church, the sky had grown dark.
I can’t fully explain what I felt.
I was so happy just to be standing on the property. It felt like I was finally visiting a place my heart already knew.
We stood at the bottom of the steps and looked up at the beautiful church.
Then I noticed something.
“David,” I said, “look! There are notes on all the doors.”
I ran up the steps like a little child. When I reached the first door, I stopped.
I began reading the note.
The words seemed to leap right into my heart.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
In that moment, I knew.
Those words were for me.
Not because I deserved them.
But because my Father wanted me to know He had seen every prayer I had whispered for months.
He had seen every time I drove by.
Every quiet prayer.
Every act of obedience.
My heart overflowed with joy.
I began worshiping right there on those church steps.
Then I walked to another door.
The same note was there.
I smiled through tears.
“Father,” I whispered, “thank You.”
“Thank You for letting me pray for this church.”
“Thank You for letting me love these people.”
Then I said something I’ll never forget.
“Lord… I wish You could shine Your light on me right now. This moment is so beautiful.”
The words had barely left my lips when one of the church’s exterior lights suddenly came on.
It shined directly on my face.
David looked at me with a smile and softly said, “Oh, baby.”
We wrapped our arms around each other and simply stood there, enjoying the presence of our Lord. We didn’t need to say anything else.
Our Father had answered the simplest prayer with the sweetest reminder.
I’ve carried that moment in my heart ever since.
If the Holy Spirit ever gently nudges you to pray for someone…
Pray.
If He places a church on your heart…
Pray.
If He brings a neighbor, a friend, or even a stranger to your mind…
Pray.
You may never know what your prayers accomplish.
You may never see all that God is doing.
But your Father sees every whispered prayer. He treasures every act of obedience.
And every now and then…
He gives His children a little glimpse that He was listening all along.
Never underestimate one quiet “yes” to God.
He can do more with one willing heart than we could ever imagine.
“Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10(NIV)
